XB Presents: Naija 20 Hottest Tracks Of 2017

2017 in Nigerian Music has been great. From the saucy albums, to the juicy stories, to the Nigerian-
Ghana beef, to the thousands of songs dropped, this year. Many many things have really gone down, this year (2017). This was the year we got the first MOBO Awards for Africa – we got two -, the year
Wizkid dropped his acclaimed album; “Sounds
From The Other Side,Timaya’s in the Grammy’s, Maleek Berry became one of Nigeria’s favourites, and Mayorkun is our next rated!

Too much songs (if this sounds like “sauce”?), have “happened” this year, and I tell you it’s hard job picking the best – and top – twenty. I mean, for every jam I list, I can name four others that could’ve made the list. BUT…
Without much ado, there you have it, the top twenty
Nigerian songs for 2017.

20. MUT4Y ft. Wizkid – Manya

Even though this jam came late in the year
(November), there’s no argument on the fact that this is one of the hottests of 2017. StarBoy producer/DJ, and one half of Legendury Beatz duo, Mut4y, hooked up with “the real starboy,” and baddest producer Killertunes, and when such union
happens, the result is usually “Manya.”
Still that Wizkid type Afro-infused dancehall vibe, the song had Wizkid singing, at first, like one American boy that can speak pidgin. Later, he changed, and he was like a veteran Igbo highlife singer. Good for him!

19. Davido – FIA

This is real FIA! Like, literal Fire. Davido’s had the biggest year, in his career, ever, dropping the biggest hits in Africa, this year. Just like his
previous hits “IF” and “Fall,” the song rides on the “pon pon pon” wave, and this is undeniably one of the best jams of the year. Just like “Manya,” it came late, appearing November
10, and maybe that’s why it’s here ?

18. Lil Kesh – No Fake Love

After his debut album, Y.A.G.I, and his departure from Olamide’s YBNL Nation, Lil Kesh has struggled to pick up his pace, and remain as credible as he once was. This had him re-brand, and start getting “positive” – as he said in an interview. It affected him a lot, but his consistency and relentless work
still made him have some of the best songs in
2017. And, “No Fake Love” is the stand-out.
Seriously, this is one of the few rap songs that “hit” in 2017. Yeah, he actually rapped!

17. M.I Abaga – You Rappers Should Fix Up Your Life

Everything about this song is “unconventional,” from the theme to the Trap beat, to the long-title. The veteran rapper, and Chocolate City C.E.O, Jude “M.I” Abaga, decided to call the singing rappers to order, since they need him to “figure sh*t out!” He challenged rappers and told ’em SA rappers are killing ’em. And, it was one of the most engaging conversations in the music circle, this year. Many upcoming rappers, like Dremo, BlaqBonez, Lord Vino, Payper, N6, dropped replies to the single.
That’s not all, it’s one of 2017’s bests!

16. Simi – Joromi

Doubtlessly, Simi’s the hottest Nigerian female artist this year. She dropped one of the best albums in Nigeria, this year, her sophomore, “Simisola.” And, one of the singles from the LP is “Joromi!” Hot, and great.

15. Tekno – GO

Another man’s food is another man’s poison.
Seriously, Tekno is the African Prince. No. 1 in
Africa, as he usually say. As usual, he’s on a pon pon type of Afro-dancehall beat.. WO!!, leave story, the song is hot! That’s what I’m trying to say, jare.
Thank you!

14. DJ Consequence – Assignment feat. Olamide

Oloun, Olamide is the best street artist of all time. Tell small boys like Flex B, and upcomings like Small DOCTOR, not to get involved, ojere. DJ Consequence got Baddo, and they f*cked sh*t up!

Won n wa ‘die, assignment! Assignment,
assignment! Little kids, have you done your assignments ?

13. Tekno – Yawa

Masterkraft can do a magikk! And, it didn’t take too long for Tekno to realize. And, that was how Tekno started the year, 2017, on a high note! If you leave me… Complete it yourself, biko!

12. Tiwa Savage – Ma Lo feat. Wizkid, Spellz

The chemistry Tiwa and StarBoy started on Band continued on this bang track. Wizkid did the hook, and he was sounding so emotional, like he was begging her not to go, and crying. Tiwa also did her stuffs well. Roboskeke roboskeske. Omor, that woman is Nigerian oh!

11. Reekado Banks – Easy (Jeje)

One thing ’bout Mavins is that they don’t follow
trends. In 2017, they didn’t do pon pon pon, and it hurt ’em, so much. BUT, in this case, it was a blessing! I don’t know what Reekado must have thought when he jumped on that fast beat. BUT, only God knows hits… To cut, the story, Easy became the talk of the town – and you know, one of the hottests in 2017!

10. Wizkid – Daddy Yo

Wizkid made the first hit of 2017! Riding on the wave he got from his Sony deal, Drake
collaboration, and international acclaim, he dropped this dancehall club banger, which featured signee, Efya, from Ghana. It dropped, very very late into 2017, and it picked up in 2018. Yo man, “Daddy Yo” issa hit!

9. Kiss Daniel – Yeba

One of the rules of the game is; know what’s good for you! Kiss Daniel knows.
Last year, Kiss was routing all the Awards,
alongside, Wizkid. His “Mama” was doing miracles, just like “Baba Nla.” And, wait, which of his colleagues that were nominated for Next Rated in 2015 (Lil Kesh, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello) could battle Wizkid for Artist Of The Year, and Song Of The Year, in 2016 ? Kiss Daniel continued, in 2017, he dropped a Killertunes-produced Afro- dancehall jam, “Sofa,” which turned up clubs. But, his year wouldn’t have been Mega (99!) without “Yeba.” The creativity on this jam is enough!

8. Runtown – For Life

After “Mad Over You” last year, Runtown was one of the most respected acts on the continent. And, then, everybody was waiting.. For that follow-up that’ll show us whether he’s a hitmaker or not. Runtown, made use of the formula and you know what ? For Life!
7. Mayorkun – Mama
From Rookie Of The Year, to … Well, do you really
think this guy a’int worth more than Next Rated, this
year ? He, alongside Kiddominant, remade Fall Part 2. Issa Banger!

6. Davido – Fall

You know your song is a hit, when children on the streets sing it all around. Money fall on you! And, I can’t remember for how many months, stuffs kept falling on us.
You can’t list Davido’s top ten ever, and not include “Fall!”

5. small DOCTOR – Penalty

Omor, see street on another level. Small doctor
crossed over into the mainstream, with this jam. It’s disturbed the streets, this festive season. And, yeah, small doctor is now a BIG DOCTOR, please!

4. Olamide – Wo!

In 2017, Olamide was an Afrobeats singer – and it should go down in history. He was neither street hop, or a rapper. Until WO! came… Very street-ish, streetish groove and beat made by Young John,
streetish raps, and catchy hook – even the verses are catchy. BUT for Wo, this year would’ve been sh*t for Olamide!

3. Ycee – Juice feat. Maleek Berry

Pon pon pon saved many artists, including former Tinny Ent rapper. Not that he’s no more signed to Tinny, but, he’s no more a rapper. And that journey started from Juice. He got Maleek Berry, and Adey – and they did magik. Many covers were made, and the history of pon pon pon can’t be complete without this.

2. Wizkid – Come Closer feat. Drake

Wizkid, and Davido held down the year. International
Wizkid has had impressive jams, this year,
including “Sweet love,” “african bad gyal” feat. RnB
star, Chris Brown, Everytime featuring Atlanta
Trapper, Future, Medicine – and a remix with Igbo
heavyweights, Phyno and Flavour. Above all, is
“Come Closer” featuring Canadian rapper, Drake,
who had previously featured on his Ojuelegba
Remix. Come Closer is the first single off Wizkid’s
“Sounds From The Other Side” album – which also
had the likes of Trey Songz, and Major Lazer, as
guests.

Win-win!

1. Davido – IF

Davido’s failure in 2016, must have had him get
back to his senses, and return back 2 basics. Recall
that, in 2016, Sony Music got hold of him, gave him
a deal, hooked him up with producers “from the
other side,” and ruined the year for him. He did an
EP – something that was supposed to be like
Wizkid’s SFTOS, but it failed!
2017, Davido got back on track, met the darling
boy of the moment, who doubles as a producer,
Tekno and he did “IF” – a song many think Tekno
must have written. Everything was on point! From
sampling the popular “nor do gra gra,” to the beat,
to everything. Covers went down, and Africa
scattered. This is by far Nigeria’s best jam for
2017, and no other should get involved. IF FIA Fall
on you Like DAT. Just one Pere? You’ll come back
for more!
